Abstract
Genetic and environmental factors play a role in the cause and development of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Recent studies have suggested an important role of the gut-brain axis (GBA) and intestinal microbiota in modulating the risk of ADHD . Here, I will provide a brief overview of the clinical and biological picture of NDDs and how the GBA could be involved in their pathophysiology. I will briefly discuss key biological mechanisms involved in the GBA and how these may increase the risk of developing NDDs. I will share some of the results my group (and our collaborators) have obtained showing the putative effects the GBA could have on (the risk of) NDDs (and related behavior). Understanding these mechanisms may help to characterize novel treatment options via identification of disease biomarkers.
