Regulation of physiology via a dietary lipid metabolite.

Abstract
Metabolism and cell signaling are tightly interconnected, with each one regulating the other. The mechanisms how cell signaling regulates metabolic pathways have been extensively studied, for instance via transcriptional regulation of gene expression or via post-translational regulation of metabolic enzymes. I will discuss the other direction – how metabolites regulate signaling pathways. One mechanism is via formation of post-translational modifications of protein via metabolites. One example of such a reversible modification is S-acylation, the attachment of lipids to protein cysteines via thioester bonds. I will discuss recent evidence that different lipids compete for acylation of single sites on proteins, thereby regulating their function.
