Abstract
Natural variation, sub-structural features, heterogeneity and porosity make fracture modelling of wood and other naturally occurring heterogeneous and cellular materials challenging. This is particularly true in the case of dynamic fracture. In this talk, I will present a phase field model for simulating fracture in such complex materials at high loading rates. The phase field model is based on variational principles and requires few additional parameters. The model is validated against experiments performed on different materials and geometries. The talk also includes simulations of fracture in high resolution wood and other complex microstructures.
