Abstract
After a brief review of the mean-field and pair-approximation classes of epidemic model, I will introduce an alternative type of model that can be applied at the level of individuals rather than whole populations. I will discuss some insights that this construction provides into the classic mean-field and pair-approximation models and will briefly consider the potential of this methodology for representing the complexities of real-world epidemic systems.
