Abstract
To achieve post graduate qualifications the development of deep expertise is required and this often continues as one pursues a career in academia. In industrial R&D we can sometimes benefit from a flexible, broad approach in order to respond to the changing needs of the labour market, commercial pressures, and occasional setbacks. Allowing oneself to move away from expertise to a more generalist approach can result in interesting career progression and be a route to making a role of oneβs own devising.
