Abstract
In the second half of the eighteenth century, Germany was swept by a wave of Anglophilia that shaped the German Enlightenment and left no aspect of German culture untouched. A crucial figure in this process was the writer, Christian Felix Weiße – whose role in the cultural transfer between Britain and Germany, however, has been all but forgotten. This talk reconsiders Weiße as the most prolific German translator of English literature in his lifetime, a singularly productive intercultural entrepreneur, and influential networker in the Enlightenment ‘Republic of Letters.’
