We would all like to know the weather a few days in advance. It would be useful for at least social, financial and safety reasons. The first weather forecast (a term put forward by Admiral FitzRoy, the captain of Darwin’s Beagle) was printed in The Times on August 1, 1861. The governing equations are now routinely solved using petaflops—a thousand million million calculations per second ! The talk will present the history and mathematics of weather forecasting and describe some of the people involved in its development.
