Abstract
An important class of active material consists of fluids of self-propelled particles, which might represent, for example, swimming bacteria. The statistical mechanics of these fluids is very rich, including some behaviour that mirrors equilibrium molecular fluids, as well as new non-equilibrium phenomena. We will discuss two situations where the non-equilibrium character is important: glassy behaviour at high density [1], and rare fluctuations that exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking [2].
