BPI Seminar – Thursday 27 January 2022
11.30
In 1818 the Giétro Glacier in the Canton of Valais (Switzerland) ruptured leading to an outburst flood that devastated the local valley and the city of Martigny.
From the available historical background and with the aid of numerical simulations, it was possible to reconstruct the flood using three plausible scenarios.
The results were compared with testimonies and show that under simple hypotheses, these floods can be modeled with modern numerical methods at low computational cost. In the present context of climate change these historical disasters should warn us about the severity and the associated risks these floods have.
