Abstract
In this talk I will outline a proof that Khovanov homology detects the figure eight and the cinquefoils. The proof relies on many deep results in gauge theory as well as Khovanov homology and homotopy, but unlike the published proofs of these results, it does not make any use of Heegaard Floer homology. This is based mostly on joint work with John Baldwin and Ying Hu
