Abstract
Quantum particles are able to tunnel through a potential barrier: Due to their probabilistic nature, they may pass through classically impenetrable barriers, even at zero temperature. This can also be achieved in macroscopic systems, for example in superconducting Josephson junctions, where dissipation modifies the tunneling without prohibiting it. In this talk, I will introduce a topological planar Josephson junction, where quantum tunneling connects topologically distinct regions. I will explain what topological systems are and how they can be promoted by tunneling processes, with resulting states being superpositions of topologically trivial and non-trivial states — Schrödinger’s cat in macroscopic systems.
