Abstract
In binaries composed of either white dwarfs or early-type stars, the dominant tidal process involves the dissipation of internal gravity waves via nonlinear wave breaking. The details of this wave breaking process affect the spin evolution of the star and may also give rise to detectable transients. I will describe the result of resolved, 2D hydrodynamical simulations of gravity wave breaking in a uniformly stratified, isothermal atmosphere. I then use these results to derive a closed form expression for the orbital decay rate of highly eccentric, compact main sequence (MS)-compact object binaries. As a case study, I apply these expressions to the MS-pulsar binary J0045 -7319, which has a measured orbital decay rate, and obtain constraints on the structure of the MS star.
