Socrates versus Darwin
- đ¤ Speaker: Professor David Sedley FBA
- đ Date & Time: Wednesday 06 May 2009, 17:15 - 18:15
- đ Venue: Yusuf Hamied Centre, Christ's College
Abstract
The creationist tradition which Darwin undermined had its intellectual origins in classical antiquity, where its most seminal voice had been none other than Socrates. But Socrates’ significance in the debate has won little recognition, and Darwin himself in any case knew virtually nothing of the classical background. The aim of this lecture is to bring the ancients, and above all Socrates himself, into dialogue with him.
