Abstract

The Northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) is a key region for biogeochemical studies because of its ocean-atmosphere-cryosphere coupling, the influence of Circumpolar Deep Water, and for being located in a transition region of marine ecosystems. In addition, this region has experienced rapidly changes in ocean and cryosphere processes, such as an increase in sea surface temperature, changes in sea ice cover and phytoplankton composition. Thiago Monteiro will show some outcomes from the CARBON Team (www.carbonteam.furg.br) of the Brazilian High Latitude Oceanography Group (GOAL), regarding ocean biogeochemistry along the NAP . The CARBON Team has been developing research activities along the South Atlantic Ocean and NAP , mainly on the marine carbonate system and sea-air CO2 fluxes using both GOAL data and robust international databases as well as satellite images. He will show the variability and changes in CO2 -carbonate system that have been under investigation in these regions and the future perspectives given the ongoing climate change.
