Abstract
The coil–stretch transition is the complete unravelling of a polymer that occurs when the polymer is immersed in a non-uniform flow field and the magnitude of the velocity gradient surpasses a critical value. It was first predicted and observed experimentally in a laminar extensional flow. Later it was discovered also in randomflows, even thoughwith partially different features. After reviewing the main results on the coil–stretch transition, I will present some recent results on polymer stretching in random and turbulent flows.
