Abstract
We construct renewal processes by means of relaxation equations with fractional derivatives, defined according to the general fractional calculus introduced by Kochubei in 2011 and developed by many other authors. In particular, the alpha-order case is treated and extended by considering alpha varying in time. In the variable order case, some of the properties of both the derivative and the related process are retained, while the link with stable subordinators no longer holds.
