Abstract
Interesting systems in physics and chemistry are typically composed by a huge number N of interacting particles. The time evolution of these systems is governed by partial differential equations in N coupled variables. Due to the huge number of degrees of freedom, these equations are completely inaccessible to any analytic or numerical tool. Fortunately, it turns out that in several situations the dynamics of many body systems can be approximated by effective evolution equations. In this talk, I am going to present examples of quantum systems whose evolution can be described by effective equations, and I will discuss some of the mathematical challenges connected with the derivation of these effective equations from first-principles quantum dynamics.
