We introduce a function which measures the accessibility (in terms of the word metric) of non-solutions to word equations in finitely generated groups. We estimate the growth of this function in some examples; discuss the diversity of growth behaviours which can arise, and (time permitting) draw connections with effective notions of residual finiteness.
