Within the framework of the research project, The Freedom of the Streets: Gender and Urban Space in Eurasia 1600-1850, which analyses the gendering of early modern urban space, this paper explores the East Asian capital of Edo (present-day Tokyo). The primary focus will be on the streetscapes in the topography Illustrated Book of Famous Places in Edo (Edo Meisho Zue, 1834-36) and a methodology developed for the historical visual sources.
