Abstract

We invite you to the next Downing Site seminar series, this time on the theme ‘Pathogen Evolution’, on Monday May 16th, at 3pm in the Biffen lecture theatre (Genetics Department). This is a great opportunity to go beyond some of the barriers between neighbouring departments and learn about the different approaches to a topic.

The format is three short talks (1hr total), followed by some drinks, snacks and socialising on the grassy quad outside Plant Sciences.

Speakers will be:

Katherine Brown (Pathology) – Identification of viral transcripts in RNA -seq datasets from bees, wasps, mites and ants

Henrik Salje (Genetics) – Using evolution to understand patterns of disease spread

Samuel Wilks (Zoology) – To what extent can we expect to understand antigenic evolution as a deterministic process? An example from influenza exploring historical and potential alternative evolutionary trajectories.
