Abstract
A connectome of the Drosophila central nervous system will soon be available. The challenge now is to use this informationātogether with genetically targeted physiology and perturbationāto understand the neural basis of sophisticated behaviors. I briefly discuss the generation of the connectome as an example of ābig scienceā with striking similarities to earlier efforts to sequence genomes. I will then provide some take home lessons from Drosophila that illustrate the value of connectome-level information. Finally, I will describe our ongoing studies of aggressive behaviors in the fly and how we hope to gain mechanistic insights into persistent changes in internal brain state, context dependent gating of visual information, and goal directed decision making.
