School-based health promotion: what went wrong and where to next?

Abstract
The majority of children and adolescents worldwide are not physically active enough to maintain good health. Schools have the potential to effect large-scale, inclusive, and long-term change. Accordingly, they have been the focus of the majority of government policies and research-led intervention programmes aiming to increase young people’s physical activity. The best available evidence suggests that these programmes and policies have largely failed to achieve their desired outcomes and reasons for this are poorly understood. Mairead Ryan will discuss research from her PhD, which combines insights from multiple fields to determine why such programmes have failed and how schools can best catalyse change to improve child and adolescent health.
