Abstract
The talk will trace the history of distributed sensors from inception through to commercialisation and industrial applications.
Distributed optical fibre sensors are systems in which an optical fibre senses, along its entire length, the physical parameter of interest over ranges of many km while providing distance-resolved determination of temperature, strain or dynamic strain (vibration). Over the 40 years since the first demonstration of this concept, the technology has spawned applications from energy cables, structural monitoring, perimeter security and hydrocarbon production some of which will be illustrated.
The development of distributed sensors is also one of transitioning technology from universities into industrial activity, often into small companies or even start-ups and this migration process is another theme of the seminar.
About the author
Arthur Hartog gained a BSc in Electronics at the University of Southampton, followed by a PhD in the Optical Fibre Research Group.
In 1984, Arthur moved to York Ltd, a start-up providing instrumentation for manufacturers of optical fibre preforms, fibres and cables as well as speciality optical fibres, which later became part of Schlumberger, the leading oilfield services company. He left Schlumberger in June 2018 to work as an independent scientist and engineer. In 2020, he co-founded Fosina, a French start-up in the field of distributed optical fibre sensors.
Arthur is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and of the Optical Society of America and a Member of the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers.
