Architects and Engineers are confronted with the problem of layout configuration (i.e space planning, equipment location and pipe routing). Currently, designers solve these problems “by hand”. In the case of plant room design, from a defined schematic solution, the engineers proceed to equipment selection, then its location, followed by pipe routing governed by objective requirements (minimum surface area, minimum pipe length, minimum bend number…). In summary plant room physical design amounts to layout configuration followed by pipe routing. Computer support for layout configuration has been studied for more than thirty years. In this talk, Dr Medjdoub will present a constraint programming approach which importantly avoids the inherent combinatorial complexity for practical layout planning problems. Series of research projects led by the speaker and funded by the EPSRC and the Industry will be presented.
