Abstract
Adjoint models are increasingly used in a range of contexts within the climate science community, from creating state estimates to aiding observation system design. But what exactly is an adjoint model, and what can and can’t they tell us? In this seminar I will give a brief overview of what an adjoint model actually is, both in theory and practice. I will present the main uses within the climate science community, namely in state estimates, for reconstructions, for observing system design, and for model insight. Finally, I will provide a look at some of my adjoint modelling results and future plans.
