Abstract

The reuse of structural components in new assemblies is a circular economy strategy whose true potential for global warming mitigation is not yet assessed. In this talk, Prof. Corentin Fivet will present two recent research projects by the Structural Xploration Lab (http://sxl.epfl.ch) that push the boundaries of structural component reuse. The first one – the Geogami pavilion – combines geodesic theory and origami principles to build a freeform shell with reclaimed skis. It demonstrates how to optimize new construction methods while accommodating the intrinsic specificities of a reusable stock. The second one – the Re:Crete footbridge – considers the cutting of obsolete cast-in-place reinforced concrete wall pieces and their reassembly into a post-tensioned footbridge. It opens up broad prospects to generalize the component reuse strategy to common concrete building structures. Both projects demonstrate the huge environmental impact savings that are available when reusing waste in new load-bearing applications.
