Abstract
The Bloch group of a field, which is isomorphic up to torsion to its third K-group but has a much more elementary definition and is much easier to work with, plays a role in many questions of 3-dimensional topology and quantum invariants. The talk would discuss some of these and an alternative approach to the Bloch group, based on symplectic matrices over Z, that arises from the so-called Neumann-Zagier equations for idealtriangulations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. If time allows, some other potential applications and related topics such as Nahm sums and the Habiro ring will also be discussed.
