Abstract
Numerical dynamo models have come a long way in explaining many features of the geodynamo. Attempts to explaining the other planetary dynamos in the solar system are promising but not quite as convincing. We review the system of equations solved in the models, concentrating on the ruling force balance in the Navier-Stokes equation but also touching on the balances in the induction and energy equations. Correctly capturing these balances is the key to realistic simulations, and we discuss some of the more successful numerical approaches.
