Abstract

Earth is the rocky planet that we know best. Earth’s formation and early history must have a key influence on the origin of life on Earth, as well as Earth’s geology and later evolution. In fact, for rocky planets outside the Solar System, divergent pathways during planet formation can lead to the formation of planets vastly different from Earth. I will summarise our current understanding of planet formation, from our origins in the molecular cloud, through the planet-forming disc, to the late stages of terrestrial planet formation. I will discuss the latest advances in the field, as well as the open questions that remain, including the debate between pebble and planetesimal accretion.
