Abstract
I will review how recent sub-mm/mm surveys, coupled with multi-frequency follow-up observations, have informed our current view of galaxy formation and evolution. In particular I will present the latest results from the SHADES project, and the resulting implications for models of galaxy formation. I will conclude with a discussion of the exciting prospects offered by the now imminent next generation of mm-far-IR facilities, such as SCUBA2 , Herschel, the eSMA, and ALMA .
