Abstract
The interest here is in interactions involved in impacts, ice formation and melting. There are many such interactions. This mathematical-modelling research, motivated originally by the observed icing of airborne vehicles and the effects of storms, aims to address the following. First is the free motion of ice particles in air and water, or the distortion of water droplets in air flow, where two-way fluid /body interactions occur taking account of the small density and viscosity ratios. Second, ice growth soon after a droplet impact onto a fixed solid surface will be discussed, where the interaction is between the ice shape and the water flow over it. Third, related problems of melting or freezing of wall-mounted ice in local shear flow will be considered, concerning ice shards, debris and /or lift-off from a solid surface.
