Abstract
Many of the requirements for quantum computing have been realized using electron spins confined electrostatically in GaAs quantum dots. The same experiments have explored the physical effects arising from the interactions of single electron spins with the confinement potential, with lattice nuclei, and with each other. I will compare two approaches to quantum computation representing each quantum bit either by a single electron spin or by the parity of a spin pair. I will describe in detail experiments on electrically driven single-spin resonance, spin manipulation using the exchange interaction, and progress towards two-qubit devices.
