The general problem area addressed in my talk is complicated allomorphy, with materials drawn mostly from the Northern Wakashan language Haisla. I will show that classical arguments for abstract analyses are undercut if we put more of the burden of explanation on history, and that we arrive at a better set of predictions about languages in this way. A good bit of the talk will consist of an exposition of the phonology and morphology of Haisla.

This talk is part of the King's Occasional Lectures series.
