Using coupled climate models to understand recent and projected Southern Ocean changes

Abstract
Coupled climate models such as those participating in CMIP6 are invaluable tools for understanding the full climate system. This presentation will comprise three different Southern Ocean investigations utilising coupled climate models: (i) a literature assessment of the role of stratospheric ozone depletion in driving Southern Ocean changes in recent decades, (ii) a multimodel analysis of Antarctic Shelf Bottom Water bias and changes in coupled models, and (iii) coupled simulations with low and high Antarctic meltwater additions across the 21stCentury. The value and limitations of using coupled models for such investigations will be discussed.
