Friendship and equality

Friendship is paradigmatically a relationship between equals. Two people cannot be in an ideal friendship if they do not in some sense have equal authority. But what kind of equality of authority does friendship require, and why? In this talk I argue that ideal friendship requires equality of authority within the roles that structure the friendship. I suggest that this is because inequality in regard to such roles prevents the specific relationship from being fully voluntary.
