Abstract
We have recently generated a new mouse line which allows us to record calcium activity in microglial cells in slices and in vivo. We have used this mouse line to test whether neuronal activity elicits calcium signals in microglial cells. We found that Schaffer collateral activation in the hippocampus elicits calcium signals in microglia which are mediated by astrocyte activity. In the second part I will focus on the interaction of microglial cells/ brain macrophages with glioma cells. We found that these cells acquire a very specific phenotype and there are several mechanisms by which they promote glioma progression.
