Abstract
Nonlinear optics and photonics remains an emerging field both in modeling foundational physical processes and applcations. At the heart of advancing new knowledge is the technological ability to manage dispersion and diffraction. As it relates to diffraction, I will discuss a somewhat novel concept in photonics, but well known in other fields: Fractional diffraction and the fractional Laplacian. Combined with nonlinear effects, the discrete and continuous fractional Nonlinear Schroedinger equation (fNLSE) emerges as a model of interest in optics and photonics. Recent results and theoretical challenges will be presented in this talk.
