Abstract
Novel exhaust aerosol measurements were made on a modern diesel engine operating on diesel and biodiesel blends with and without aftertreatment devices. A two-stage mini-dilution tunnel using ultra-clean dilution air was used with a variety of aerosol instruments to determine relationships between aerosol size, number, surface area, volume and mass. These measurements were made with and without a catalytic stripper to determine how instrument response is impacted by the presence of volatile nucleation mode particles. It was shown that instrument response was improved in some cases by removal of volatile nucleation mode particles.
On-road diesel aerosol measurements were made using a Mobile Emissions Laboratory to evaluate the impact of fuel and lubrication oil sulfur content on exhaust aftertreatment performance. Details on how the measurements were made, instrumentation used, and a summary of results will be discussed.
