Abstract
Pierre Bourdieu has said that ‘art is the area par excellence of the denial of the social.’ Through exploring two questions: ‘What are young artists doing as they seek to start a career?’ and ‘Why Berlin?’, I have found that young artists are acutely aware of the role of the social. In addition to developing critiques of some existing sociological accounts of art, I explore unique characteristics of Berlin as an ‘art capital’ and suggest that attributes of the local art world contribute to young artists’ reflexive encounters with the social.
