Reflections on merging the digital and the physical

Abstract
The idea is simple: correlate the physical world with the virtual world in such a way that humans can conveniently access services and applications that are tuned to their circumstances and needs, “in the moment”. But does this work in practice? What are the system implications? And what is it good for, anyway? I will draw on work in ubiquitous computing, including recent studies of physically-embedded security protocols.
Bio:
Tim Kindberg is a senior research scientist at HP Labs Bristol and a visiting professor at the University of Bath. His research interests are in urban, pervasive, mobile and distributed computing, including both systems and human factors. He holds a PhD in computer science from the University of Westminster and a BA in mathematics from the University of Cambridge.
