Abstract
Self- and proxy-report questionnaire data serve as the foundation of much basic and clinical research on autism and related neurodevelopmental conditions. Although methodologically rigorous measure development, evaluation, and adaptation initiatives are essential for high-quality science, very few patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been developed or thoroughly validated for use with autistic individuals. This talk provides an overview of the “state of the field” of PROM use in autism research, highlighting both current issues in the field and examples of positive developments, as well as future directions for to improve the quality of work in this area. In addition, the speaker’s newly-established Autism PRO Mnet group will be introduced, along with a brief overview of the group’s initiatives to promote valid and meaningful outcome measurement throughout the field of autism research.
