This seminar raises the issue of reliability and considers it in the light of present attitudes in society. Materials from the first Cambridge Assessment Conference will be shown and discussed. We will also refer to studies of examiners’ marking, and ask if and how it would be possible to be more frank about the inevitable error in all measurements, particularly in those as complex as general educational assessments. How could we ‘educate the public’ more, so that they have a better understanding of key issues in assessment?
