Abstract
Many two-dimensional canonical scattering problems from elecromagnetism, acoustics and water wave theory have analogues inplate theory. For example, a model for an antenna array based on infinitely long cylinders shares the same geometry as a row of bolts (or holes) in an elastic plate. In this presentation, we will review the formulation of multiple scattering theory for waves in plates, using classical (Kirchhoff) theory and also Mindlin’s more sophisticated theory. We will show how to calculate the wavenumbersfor Rayleigh—Bloch waves in thin plates, and finally we will examine the effectiveness of `small scatterer’ models, akin to Foldy’s approximation in acoustics.
