Abstract
As disaster researchers, practitioners, policymakers and enthusiasts, we often focus on the disastrous event as a dramatic, anticipated and governed phenomena. But what about non-events? Disasters that might not have happened after a major hazard occurred? Events that are ‘not quite disasters’? And, how do we anticipate such events? How do we govern them through disaster risk reduction and management? In this seminar, we will hear from Professor Ben Anderson (Durham University), Brady Podloski (Disaster Recovery Branch, Government of Alberta) and Dr Peter McGowran (Oxford Brookes University) who will discuss themes including non-events, climate change, disaster risk reduction, assemblage theory and the potential lessons from ‘not quite disasters’.
