Intensity effects in the standard model and beyond

Abstract
High intensity laser facilities such as Vulcan and ELI will soon allow us access to nonlinear vacuum phenomena in QED , including nonlinear Compton scattering and, perhaps, Schwinger pair production. I will review the basic lepton-photon scattering amplitudes in the presence of a strong background (laser) field, and discuss the phenomenology of the implied electron mass shift. Finally, taking noncommutativity of spacetime as a source of physics beyond the standard model, I will discuss the consequences of combined noncommutative, strong field effects for pair production.
