Abstract
Tape-springs and other related slit and closed-section flexible tubes are often used as lightweight extendable structural members. Advantages of these structures include a very compact coiled stowed state, and a controllable deployed length. Limitations of these structures in their deployed state include low torsional stiffness and buckling strength, and typically large thermally induced distortions. This talk will provide an introduction to some of the challenges encountered in the storage an uncoiling of these tubes, including the formation of localised folds, local buckling, deployment shock, and ‘blossoming’, and will discuss some of the practical approaches taken to remedy them. Examples will primarily be taken from the space industry, which has arguably been the scene of the greatest proliferation in coiled tape-spring-like deployment mechanism designs and applications.
