Abstract
In 2020, all secondary school examinations in the UK were cancelled due to the ensuing COVID -19 pandemic. Lacking formal examination results and in an attempt to ensure consistency and control for grade inflation, an algorithm was used by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) to estimate studentsโ final grades. The use of this algorithm ultimately led to significant public backlash and it was subsequently abandoned. Roger Taylor was Chair of Ofqual at the time and will speak about this stormy and controversial episode in education history. There will be approximately 10 minutes for questions at the end of the talk.
