Additive Manufacture (AM) in metals and alloys presents engineers and designers with an opportunity to reimagine both component design and their means of manufacture. It is however, not without its challenges – high amongst them being that of manufacturing parts to be defect-free. Sometimes, however, the presence of defects can be advantageous, enabling us to exert high degree of microstructural control or even to improve material properties under certain circumstances. In this talk I will cover how defects can form in AM, how we can avoid them but also how we may use them to our advantage in manufacture of engineering components by AM.
