Dramatic flag-like structures are observed in a confined geometry when a shear-thinning fluid is sandwiched between two lubricating layers. In this presentation, I will discuss the laboratory experiments that were undertaken to study the origin and evolution of these instabilities, as well as the issues faced by an inexperienced experimenter. A subset of the experimental results will be shown and discussed, and some interesting observations will be summarised.
