Abstract
Internal waves are responsible for significant mixing in the ocean and distribute energy through a variety of mechanisms. Triadic resonance instability (TRI) is one such mechanism, in which an internal wavebeam above a critical amplitude emits two ‘child’ internal wavebeams. We investigate how interaction with a vortex ring can trigger this instability at a lower amplitude than the critical, and show some experiments trying to understand which aspects of the vortex ring are causing the collapse.
